It was a busy weekend on Broad Peak as climbers settled in BC after an assault on the summit. An all too brief spell of good weather saw six climbers reach the foresummit, every had to turn around below the main summit as the weather quickly fell apart. Broad Peak was the focus of more action today as news came in from Field Touring Alpine about a dramatic rescue that ended in the safe recovery of two climbers and excellent team work on the mountain and at HQ. It looks like the weather will break down again mid week, tempting a lot of climbers to aim for early next week summit bid on K2, though it is impossible to predict weather that far ahead.
Weather:
High pressure aloft should keep conditions above 7500m fairly mild through mid week. Weather conditions look to change by the mid/end of this week (earliest expected time is around Wed. night to Thursday) due to an approaching deep trough. The trough is currently forecasted to increase winds to a gusty 20-25+ m/s near the Summit by the end of the week. Also expect more unstable conditions with more precipitation around midweek due to the approaching trough. Until then look for a slight chance for snow showers below 7500m through the first part of the week. Winds look to be W/SW through mid week and turn more SWerly due to the trough.
Broad Peak:
Austrian Broad/K2 double Turned around just 200 vertical meters shy of the summit and are now back in BC contemplating joining the Magic Line team.
Chad Kellogg and Alfred Schreilechner: Back in BC after reaching the foresummit. Plan on heading to K2 next week.
Adventure Peaks The team hopes to be at Camp 3 this weekend.
Field Touring Alpine The team is back in BC after a dramatic rescue of two climbers.
Dutch Climbers hope to sleep at camp 2, one member of the team has dropped out.
