Attack on Pakistani Prime Minister designate Aziz!
Jul 30, 2004 13: 44 EST
A
Suicide bomber just outside of Islamabad attacked Shaukat Aziz, Pakistan’s
Prime Minister designate’s motorcade today. While he escaped, initial reports
have 5 to 6 dead and 22 to 25 people injured. Under an agreement made last
month, Aziz is set to takeover as Prime Minister, following Chaudhry Shujaat
Hussain’s departure.
This bad news comes just days after K2 was summited for the first time
after two summit-less years, and just in time for the big 50 year anniversay
of the first ascent of the mountain. A summer highlight for Pakistan as well
as the rest of the climbing community.
Many climbers are now getting packed up and ready to head back to Pakistan’s
capital, Islamabad. These recent attacks could have an effect on expeditions
and their itineraries. Chad Kellogg, who left K2 almost a week ago might
already be back in Islamabad. Edurne Pasaban and Juanito Oiarzabal were last
in an Islamabad hospital and scheduled to fly to Spain earlier today.
The incident is now under investigation. Aziz was coming out of a campaign
meeting when the bomb went off. Elections are set for this August 18th.
