Broad Peak Summit in Doubt
Jul 9, 2004 12: 03 EST
A
conflicting report from the Italian K2 camp states that Chad Kellogg, Rory
Stark and Alfred Schreilechner did not reach the summit of Broad Peak at
8051 m.
The Italian team's official liaison officer, Raffat Kalim, reports that
the two Americans, one Austrian and climbers on Kari Kobler's permit, including
the Italian Scoiattolo climber, Mario Dibona turned back at the fore-summit
(8028m). There is roughly a 300 meter climb along the crest from the fore-summit
to the main summit and because of high winds and snow the climbers aborted
their attempt.
However, Planetmountain and the Scoiattolo K2 expedition report that
Mario Dibona did in fact reach the summit, which would mark his fourth 8,000er.
