K2 Summit Push in Full Swing: Climbers Going up Others Coming Down
Jul 22, 2004 16: 32 EST
Two years ago today 9 climbers reached the summit of K2, no one has been able to summit since.
Chad Kellogg and Rory Stark, along with climbers from several other teams,
have aborted their summit attempt after reaching Camp 2 earlier today and
encountering “forty mile an hour winds” and snow.
Weather forecasts from both SMHI and WNI have predicted “not very stable
weather expected today on K2, but the weather will slowly start to improve
starting tomorrow [July 23].
From the Italian K2 team, 3 climbers will sleep above House’s Chimney and 6 others will sleep at Camp 2 this evening.
Weather is expected to remain good through Monday, with low winds and low humidity above 7500 meters.
According to Perez from the Al Filo Base Camp, the team went up yesterday
to C2. Saturday at C4; they will set the tents at 8000m and attempt the summit
on Sunday. It appears that Edurne Pasaban’s prediction from yesterday that
about 17 climbers from her team and the Italian team making a summit bid
may come true.
From Serafino Ripamonti with the Italian K2 South team “Fortunately the
snow conditions are better than we expected. Over the past few days the wind
has swept the mountain clean and climbing has not been too difficult.”
Both of AdventureWeather’s two separate forecasts and The Italian K2
forecast are today confirming a summit-opportunity this weekend. Kari Kobler’s
reports on the other hand, are now forecasting 10 days of non-summitable
weather.
